Christian Education for Adults and Children
at St. Anne's Episcopal Church
|
All of St. Anne's Christian education programs, from adult to our youngest children, are built on our St. Anne's vision of sharing our stories in the context of the scriptures. Everywhere you look in the Bible, you see people taking "right" actions that drew them closer to God or "wrong" actions that distanced them from seeing the presence of God in their life. By associating the thoughts and feelings this Biblical person had with our own thoughts and feelings from our own life situations, we lose feelings of isolation and create a bond of identity with this Biblical person and with each other. This bond gives us a sense of connection and community with each other and serves as a roadmap for our individual journey into the sacred mystery of God. Education also takes place in our worship experiences together. Our clergy and lay homilies (short sermons) educate by enlarging on the "heart of the matter" that the scriptures are teaching that day. Sometimes the entire worship service centers on education, when we have an "instructed Eucharist" explaining the reasons behind each part of our worship service. In addition, our church year is divided into seasons according to events in the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus. Our homilies educate our congregation about the meaning of these seasons. We offer well-attended Holy Week Services, leading to Easter Sunday. These include the Triduum of Maundy Thursday which includes a Seder Meal extended into a Holy Communion and the stripping of the altar, Good Friday's stories of Jesus and the Way of the Cross, and a Holy Saturday Vigil with Baptisms of new Christians. Education continues to take place in programs outside our worship services, described here:
